Louie Zamperini is the first man who could have probably ran a mile under 4 minutes. Sadly he never had the opportunity as he was in his twenties when World War II began. He enlisted in the US Army Air Forces where he was a bombardier in a B-24, nicknamed "the Flying Coffin". In 1943, during a rescue mission, his plane crashed and he ended up lost at sea, living in a small inflated raft with no food and water. After drifting West for 47th day, the raft reached the Marshall Islands, which were Japanese territories. Louie and the pilot, Phil, were sent to Japan as POW.
This is the incredible story of Louie's life that Laura Hillenbrand tells in Unbroken. While the book is a non-fiction, it avoids the traps of a monotonous biography. Laura is able to tell this incredible adventure with a narrative tone that makes the book easy to read. The story is gripping and enthralling. As a European, I read a lot of books about World War II in Europe. Unbroken was a way to learn more about the Pacific war, where American and Japanese fought brutally and violently, island by island. While the book focuses on Louie, it is also the story of American soldiers in the Army forces and POW in Japan. Laura Hillenbrand did an amazing research work to bring to life and share the fate of hundreds of thousand of American soldiers who fought and died, or were captured and parked in camps in Japan.
