I am struggling to finish The Book Thief despite all the wonderful things I have heard and read about it. It is not that the story is boring, but I can't determine who is the book audience. The Book Thief was designed and won prizes as a children book. At the same time, the narrator of the story is the Death and the subject of the book is one of the most dramatic time of our history, the Nazi Germany. I find it far too powerfully dark for young hands, but at the same time the writer's tone is too light for adult hands.
An another point I struggle with is the book structure and narrative pathway. Death keeps jumping in time and space. The main story is also cut in many parts by small aside moments, where the Death refers to an another event or deals of the past. This bugs me as it makes it difficult for me to immerse myself fully in what is going on.
I will try to finish it but I am afraid I will give up on the way. What a shame...
