Thanks to the 9h flight between Paris and NYC (instead of the usual 7h30), the 4h30 of train between NYC and Philadelphia (instead of the usual 2h), I had time to read two full books, both fantasy. While I loved The Queen of the Tearling, a good/solid/classical fantasy, I enjoyed far less Dead Witch Walking.
The latter book is a pale copy of Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels. The heroine of the Hollows series, Rachel Morgan, is a witch who quit the I.S., the FBI for paranormal beings, to setup her own practice. Hello! Does it ring a bell? Kate Daniels does exactly the same. Rachel Morgan has also a big mouth, poor and vulgar vocabulary and ends up in difficult situations every ten pages of the book because of her silliness. Kate Daniels series has the sexy Curran Lennart in it, Rachel Morgan series has not. Conclusion: I prefer Kate Daniels to Rachel Morgan.

The Queen of the Tearling was much better. The plot is quite classic but is well delivered. Kelsea spends the first nineteen years of her life hidden in the forest to escape the assassins that want her dead. She is the heir to the Tearling throne and her uncle dreams to have her removed to take her place. Protected by some of her mother's former supporters, she learns her role of Queen. On her nineteenth birthday, the Queen Gard comes to escort her to the Keep, the castle where she will begin her reign. But, dangers and traitors are everywhere. Erika Johansen wrote a solid novel with enough suspense and twists to keep the reader interested. Kelsea is smart though she is not pretty, which gives a very realistic tone to the novel. I will wait impatiently for the second installment due in June 2015.
