As some of you know, I am part of a readers list at Random House. Being part of the list entails I get some free books in exchange for honest reviews on social media.
The positive + : I love free hardcovers, especially when I receive them as ARCs (Advance readers Copies i.e. before the release date).
The negative - : I asked to join the romance list but I keep receiving thrillers. And I do not read that many thrillers except when they are written by Michael Connelly (see my review Day 8).
The first ARC I received is Bones Never Lie, the Temperance Brennan book number 17. I never read the previous 16 in the series but, does not matter, as each book is a stand alone. I see the questioning frowns on some of your faces: "Temperance Brennan.... where did I hear this name?". Temperance is famous thanks to the TV show Bones. I heard the show is loosely adapted from the books though it keeps the essential elements, Temperance the anthropologist, and Ryan, the Canadian police detective.
In this book Temperance faces the demons from her past. Two kids are found dead in what looks like the same ritual: unidentified cause of the death, pre-pubescent teenaged girls and posed corpses. The investigation points to a series of murders that took place in Montreal ten years ago. One of the killer, Anique Pomerleau, disappeared before being arrested. This time, Temperance is determined not to let her escape.
I did not like the book that much to be frank. It is short enough that it is not boring, but it is not good enough (in my opinion) to recommend it to other people. I was not really surprised by the ending, nor in rush to get to ir. The part I preferred by far was not the investigation but, the relationships that are weaved around the intrigue like Temperance and her mum, Temperance and Andrew, Temperance and her cat (!). Read it if you are unconditional fans of Bones, otherwise watch Revenge on Netflix. You will get secrets from the past, murders and drama for a cheaper price.
