According to some critics, Red Rising is a mix of Ender's Game and Hunger Games.
This is absolutely true. I loved this novel so much that I began to read at 9PM and finished the book at 5AM... Really bad considering I had some final exams to study today and I was totally useless. Really great because it means it was a great book. The story is very compelling. Pierce Brown succeeds to build a realistic world where bad things happen and where appearances can be deceiving.
Darrow is the helldiver of the Lamba Red tribe. He lives under Mars surface and his job, as the other Reds, is to mine the Helium 3 that will allow to terraform the planet. Humans will be able to setup colonies on Mars and escape the crowded and polluted Earth. The life on Mars is harsh. The society is strictly regulated by a caste system, each power stratum represented by a color. Reds are at the bottom while the Golds are the masters of all. Darrow's only joy is his wife, Eo. But, Eo has dreams. She believes that the Reds are enslaved and exploited by the other castes. And, she wants Darrow to head a Red rebellion.
For the ones who love Ender's Game, they will find a lot of politics and strategy in Pierce Brown's novel. For the Hunger Games fans, Red Rising has the same dark atmosphere in a world where violence is quick to happen and where everything does not end necessarily well.
