Halloween is here and to celebrate spooky times I picked up Let the right one in. An history with vampires, murders, what can be better?
In a desolated town in Sweden in the 80s, Oscar, a shy boy, bullied by the other kids, meets his new neighbors, an old man, Hakan, and a girl, Eli. We learn quickly that Eli was turned as a vampire when she was a child. Hakan, a former teacher, takes care of her by killing people to take their blood and feed her. Eli is able to help Oscar, bullied by other boys, and a friendship begins to blossom.
If you like gore, and I am talking about serious gore, then you will probably squeak in delight when you read Let the right one in. This book contains bloody murders, perverse relationships, violent bullying, gruesome scenes at the local swimming pool, exchange of favor (I am talking about blood vs. money) in a dark building basement, all of this in the depressing settings of the cold and sad Blackeberg.
It gave me the creeps, which I think was the original intent of the author, but it was not a particularly pleasant feeling.
An horror movie was released in 2010. I will avoid watching it as the book was already too much.... Happy Halloween everyone!
